Wind damage isn’t always as severe as storm damage. However, that doesn’t mean you have to put off repairs. This is especially true if some of the asphalt shingles have been lifted on one side, exposing the underside to rainwater infiltration that can lead to leaks. Also, the resulting creases on the shingles can dislodge the protective granules, increasing their vulnerability to ultraviolet damage. The longer you postpone much-needed repairs, the bigger and more costly the damage can become.
Strong winds alone can bring significant damage to asphalt shingle roofing systems. Roofing contractors refer to this as “wind-lifted” damage, and it doesn’t take a keen eye of a professional to notice it. The aforementioned creases are usually horizontal and appear about an inch below the edge of the shingle above it. The stronger the wind is, the more that side of the shingle until it creates a visible crease. It is worth noting that roofing manufacturers pre-apply adhesives under the edges of the asphalt shingles to ensure they latch on during windstorms. Be sure to ask your roofer about this feature when choosing from a variety of roofing products.
A roof replacement is only recommended if the damage is too extensive and significant that simple repairs aren’t enough to fix the problem.
