Like the shingles and flashings, they need to be replaced as soon as they show extensive damage. The rafter tails of sloped roofing systems create an overhang that extends from the exterior walls. The resulting gaps are covered with soffit boards to prevent wind-blown debris and small animals like rodents and insects from gaining access to the attic. These components are usually made of aluminum, wood or vinyl. They are also perforated to allow the entry of cool air into the attic and promote adequate ventilation for the entire roof.
Covering the rafter tails are the fascia boards. They run through one end of the roofline to the other, giving sloped roofs a finished appearance. They are also the part of the roof where the gutters are hung and attached. Fascia boards can be made of aluminum, vinyl, wood, or composite.
