Signs That Tell You a Soffit and Fascia Replacement Is Due

While they are not as prominent as the other visible components of your roof, both the soffit and fascia play a crucial role in ensuring the system’s long-term weather protection. Like the shingles and flashings, they need to be replaced as soon as they show extensive damage. In this blog, GAF Master Elite® roofer Ken Morton & Sons LLC shares the signs that your roof needs a new set of soffit and fascia boards.

About Soffits and Fascias

The rafter tails of sloped roofing systems create an overhang that extends from the exterior walls. The resulting gaps are covered with soffit boards to prevent wind-blown debris and small animals like rodents and insects from gaining access to the attic. These components are usually made of aluminum, wood or vinyl. They are also perforated to allow the entry of cool air into the attic and promote adequate ventilation for the entire roof.

Covering the rafter tails are the fascia boards. They run through one end of the roofline to the other, giving sloped roofs a finished appearance. They are also the part of the roof where the gutters are hung and attached. Fascia boards can be made of aluminum, vinyl, wood, or composite.

Signs You Need Replacement Soffits and Fascia Boards

Call one of your trusted roofing contractors in the area if you notice one or more of the following signs:

  • Surface Cracks and Blisters – Soffits and fascias are visible from the ground, which means you can see if they are showing signs of deterioration. While flaking or blistering paint can be scraped off and repainted, their performance won’t be as good as new ones.

  • Moisture Damage – Brown streaks on your soffits and fascia are an indication of moisture seeping through the material. If you see warping or swelling, consider replacing them with more durable and weather-resistant material.

  • Inadequate Ventilation – Soffits and fascia boards play an integral role in promoting roof and attic ventilation. They complement the exhaust vents located at the high points of your roof, acting as intake vents that draw cool air into the attic. If the air feels too warm or humid in the attic, these two components may be part of the problem.
