The Best Practices for Asphalt Shingle Nailing

While asphalt shingles are easy to install, they must be fastened according to the manufacturer’s instructions. Failure to do so can void your warranty and cause the roofing system to fail prematurely.

Learn the best asphalt shingle nailing practices from our experienced roofers here at Ken Morton & Sons.

Proper Roofing Nails

Made in different materials and sizes, roofing nails are used to fasten shingles, install the roofing underlayment, and attach roof tiles and sheet metal. A roofing nail should have a minimum nominal shank diameter of 12 gauge, 2.67 mm and a minimum head diameter of 9.5 mm. It should have a barbed shank to prevent nail pops, blow offs and roof leaks. Larger nail heads and heavier shank gauges have more holding capability. Nails must be corrosion resistant or galvanized.

Roofing nails should be long enough to pierce through the roofing material and go 20 mm into the decking. To determine the right nail length, take note of the number of layers of shingles, shingle thickness and the flashing.

Nails must be driven straight and flat with the shingle surface. Don’t break the shingle surface with the nail head or drive nails into knotholes or cracks in the decking. Incorrect nailing needs to be fixed immediately. Shingles must be nailed from one side to the other so they stay flat.
