What Is Asphalt Shingle Curling and What Causes It To Happen

As great as asphalt shingle roofs are, they do have their own share of problems. One of the most common ones that most homeowners encounter is shingle curling. To give you a better understanding of this issue, a trusted local roofing company shares a brief explanation of what it actually is and how it occurs in the first place.

What Is Asphalt Shingle Curling?

Shingle curling is a naturally occurring problem that is common on both organic-mat and fiberglass-mat asphalt roof shingles, although it is seen more often on organic-mat shingles. As the name suggests, asphalt curling will show curling under the edges of the shingle tab.

Not to be confused with cupping, curling is when the edges turn up even when the center is flat, rather than down, although roofers sometimes see both cupping and curling occur together.

What Causes Curling To Occur?

Curling shingles are common mainly due to the fact that they can occur due to many different factors. Improper installation is probably one of the most common causes which is why it is very important that you only work with an experienced roofing company.

Poor ventilation is also a leading cause. A good ventilation system will pull outside air through intake vents and prevent moisture and heat from being trapped in your attic. Without proper airflow, heat buildup from the inside (as well as outside) can cause your shingles to curl.

Although not as common, we’ve also seen curling occur due to defective materials so, again, always work with a reputable company when it comes to something as important as your roof.
